Path of Exile: Through Sacred Ground Quest Guide

In Path of Exile, Act 2 introduces several optional side quests that reward players with valuable bonuses. One of the most useful of these quests is Through Sacred Ground, a short but rewarding mission that sends players into a haunted crypt to retrieve a sacred relic known as the Golden Hand. While this quest is technically optional, most experienced players consider it essential because it rewards a passive skill point and additional refund points, both of which contribute significantly to character progression to get Path of exile currency.

This guide explains everything you need to know about completing the Through Sacred Ground quest, including how to unlock it, where to find the Golden Hand, how to defeat the boss guarding it, and why the reward makes this quest worth completing during your Act 2 journey.

Starting the Quest

The Through Sacred Ground quest begins in the Forest Encampment, the main hub town of Act 2. To start the quest, players must speak with Yeena, a mystic and herbalist who resides in the camp. Yeena studies ancient spirits and sacred relics, and she believes that a powerful artifact known as the Golden Hand has been lost within a forgotten crypt.

However, this quest does not become available immediately upon reaching Act 2. Before Yeena will offer the mission, players typically need to progress through a few early Act 2 quests. Once those objectives are completed, Yeena will display a quest marker above her head, indicating that she has a new task for you.

After speaking with her, she explains that the Golden Hand lies somewhere within an ancient burial site deep inside the ruins of a long-forgotten settlement. She asks you to recover the relic and return it to her for safekeeping.

Interestingly, players can also trigger this quest by discovering the Golden Hand first. If you happen to find the item before speaking to Yeena, returning to town with it will automatically activate the quest dialogue.

Reaching the Crypt

The Golden Hand is located inside the Crypt, a dungeon hidden within the Fellshrine Ruins. To reach this area, players must travel through several connected zones starting from the Forest Encampment.

The typical route involves moving through the Old Fields or nearby wilderness areas until you reach the Crossroads. From there, you can locate the entrance to the Fellshrine Ruins, a gloomy area filled with ruined buildings, broken statues, and wandering undead enemies.

Somewhere within the Fellshrine Ruins you will find the entrance to the Crypt. Like many locations in Path of Exile, the exact placement of the entrance changes slightly each time because the game uses procedurally generated maps. This means players may need to explore the ruins thoroughly before discovering the dungeon entrance.

Once inside the Crypt, you will find that the dungeon contains two separate levels. The Golden Hand is located on the second level, meaning players must first navigate through Crypt Level 1 before descending deeper into the burial chambers below.

Exploring the Crypt

The Crypt is one of the darker and more atmospheric areas in Act 2. Narrow corridors, stone sarcophagi, and crumbling walls create a claustrophobic environment filled with undead enemies.

While progressing through the dungeon, players will encounter several types of enemies, including skeletal warriors, undead archers, and necromancer-like enemies capable of summoning additional minions. These enemies often deal physical damage and occasionally use cold-based attacks, which can be dangerous for characters who lack resistances.

Players should move carefully while exploring the dungeon. It is usually best to clear enemies in smaller groups rather than rushing through the corridors. Since the dungeon layout is randomly generated, finding the staircase to the second level may take some exploration.

Along the way, players might also encounter side rooms containing treasure chests or optional encounters. While these are not necessary for completing the quest, they can provide useful items and experience.

The Guardian of the Golden Hand

Deep within the second level of the Crypt lies the altar containing the Golden Hand. However, retrieving the relic is not as simple as walking up and taking it. The altar is guarded by a powerful undead boss known as Archbishop Geofri the Abashed.

Geofri is a formidable opponent compared to the regular enemies in the dungeon. As a corrupted archbishop, he combines strong melee attacks with cold damage abilities, making the fight particularly dangerous for players who are not properly prepared.

One of the most notable aspects of this boss is that he possesses curse immunity. Many character builds rely on curses to weaken enemies or amplify damage, but this mechanic prevents players from using those tactics effectively. As a result, players must rely more heavily on positioning, defensive skills, and direct damage output during the fight.

Geofri’s attacks can deal significant damage if you attempt to stand still and trade blows with him. Characters with lower defenses should maintain mobility throughout the fight, using movement skills or simply circling around him to avoid his attacks.

Ranged builds usually have an easier time with this encounter because they can maintain distance while dealing damage. Melee characters should use defensive abilities or damage mitigation skills to survive the fight.

Once Geofri is defeated, the path to the altar becomes safe.

Retrieving the Golden Hand

After defeating the guardian, players can approach the altar where the Golden Hand is embedded. Interacting with the altar will cause the item to drop onto the ground, allowing you to pick it up.

Because the Crypt environment can be visually dark and cluttered, the altar might not always be easy to spot at first glance. If you are having trouble finding it, holding the Alt key can highlight interactable items on the ground, making the Golden Hand easier to identify.

Once the item is in your inventory, your objective is simple: return to the Forest Encampment and deliver the relic to Yeena.

Players can either retrace their steps through the dungeon or use a Portal Scroll to teleport back to town instantly.

Completing the Quest

Back in the Forest Encampment, speak to Yeena again. She will thank you for recovering the sacred artifact and reward you with a special item called the Book of Skill.

Using the Book of Skill immediately grants your character a passive skill point, which can be spent in the enormous passive skill tree that defines character builds in Path of Exile. In addition to the skill point, the book also provides two passive refund points.

Refund points allow players to remove previously chosen passive nodes from the skill tree. This provides flexibility for adjusting or correcting your character build without spending rare currency items such as Orbs of Regret.

Because passive skill points are among the most valuable rewards in the entire game, this quest is widely considered one of the most worthwhile optional quests in Act 2.

Why You Should Always Complete This Quest

Even though Through Sacred Ground is optional, skipping it means missing out on permanent character progression. A single passive skill point might not seem like much at first, but over the course of a character’s development, every point matters.

These points allow players to access powerful bonuses such as increased life, damage multipliers, defensive layers, or specialized mechanics that define endgame builds.

Additionally, the refund points can be extremely useful for new players who may want to adjust their passive tree after experimenting with different skills.

Another reason to complete this quest is convenience. The Crypt is located in an area that players often pass through while exploring Act 2, meaning it rarely requires a major detour.

Additional Tips for Completing the Quest

When preparing to explore the Crypt, it is helpful to bring a few Portal Scrolls. This allows you to quickly return to town after retrieving the Golden Hand without needing to travel all the way back through multiple zones.

Players should also keep an eye out for the Labyrinth Trial that sometimes appears in Crypt Level 1. Completing these trials is necessary for unlocking the Labyrinth later in the game, which grants powerful Ascendancy classes.

Improving your gear before entering the dungeon can also make the quest much easier. Upgrading weapons, improving resistances, and equipping better skill gems can dramatically increase your survivability.

Finally, remember that Path of Exile rewards careful exploration. Taking the time to fully explore the dungeon may lead to additional loot, experience, or valuable crafting items.

Final Thoughts

The Through Sacred Ground quest is a short but meaningful side mission in Path of Exile. By traveling through the haunted Fellshrine Ruins, exploring the depths of the Crypt, and defeating Archbishop Geofri, players can recover the Golden Hand and earn a permanent passive skill point.

Although the quest may seem minor compared to the main storyline, its reward provides lasting benefits that improve your character’s strength and flexibility. For this reason, most players consider Through Sacred Ground a must-complete quest during Act 2.

Whether you are a new exile exploring Wraeclast for the first time or a veteran player starting a new league to buy POE currency, completing this quest ensures that your character gains every possible advantage on the journey ahead.
